The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reaffirmed the government's commitment to supporting the family of 15-year-old Javits Frimpong, a Ghanaian teenager who was tragically shot and killed in the Bronx, New York.

The Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson, officially received Madam Doris Adu Gyamfi, the grieving mother of the late teenager, at the Ministry in Accra on Monday, November 2, to convey the country's heartfelt condolences and promise government assistance.

During the meeting, Mr. Gyakye Quayson expressed the government's deepest sympathies to Madam Gyamfi and her family as they process the devastating loss of her son.

The Deputy Minister also assured the family that the Ministry is working directly through Ghana's diplomatic mission in the United States to engage relevant U.S. authorities, including law enforcement and municipal officials in New York.

"Hon. Quayson reiterated the Ministry's commitment to working through Ghana's diplomatic mission in the United States to engage the relevant authorities and ensure that the circumstances surrounding Javits's death receive the necessary attention," the Foreign Ministry said in an official statement.

He further offered assurances that the government will stand in full solidarity with the family and provide all required diplomatic and welfare support throughout this difficult period.

Tragic Incident in New York

The tragic event occurred on Thursday morning, October 29, 2026, when 15-year-old Javits Frimpong was shot in the abdomen shortly before 9:30 a.m. in the Claremont neighborhood of the Bronx, New York, near East 171st Street and Crotona Place while en route to school at DreamYard Preparatory School.

Police officers who responded to the scene rushed Javits to St. Barnabas Hospital in a patrol car, but he was later pronounced dead. Surveillance video from the neighborhood captured the young student being pursued across the street by suspects wearing dark tracksuits and face masks before collapsing.

The New York City Police Department (NYPD) launched a search for three young suspects believed to be between 16 and 18 years old. No arrests have been made, and police investigators continue to probe the exact motive behind the killing.

Javits, described as a quiet, bright young man who aspired to become a medical doctor, had relocated from Ghana to New York just under a year prior to live with his father, Thomas Frimpong.

The murder has sparked severe grief and outrage within the Ghanaian diaspora in the U.S. and across Ghana.Javits' father revealed to local reporters that his son had reportedly faced bullying issues at school in the days leading up to the tragedy, calling on authorities to thoroughly investigate all potential leads.
