The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Linda Akweley Ocloo, has announced plans to demolish unauthorized lorry stations, transport terminals and structures obstructing waterways as part of measures to prevent flooding in the region ahead of the peak rainy season.

Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, May 28, 2026, the Minister, who is also the Member of Parliament for Shai Osudoku, said the exercise forms part of intensified interventions being undertaken by the Greater Accra Regional Coordinating Council (RCC) in collaboration with the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs).

According to her, all unauthorized lorry stations and transport terminals operating along roads and in public spaces that obstruct free movement and drainage systems would be removed immediately in the interest of public safety and effective city management.

Ms Ocloo further disclosed that unauthorized structures built on waterways and drainage channels would also be demolished to allow the free flow of water during heavy rains.

She noted that flooding continues to pose a major threat to lives and property in the region, especially following recent weather advisories predicting more heavy rainfall in the coming weeks.

The Minister revealed that several flood-prone communities have already been identified for close monitoring and intervention. These areas include Kaneshie, Alajo, Odawna, Circle, Weija, Tetegu, Ashalaja, Dansoman, Adabraka, Ashaiman, Tema Communities 1 and 2, Madina, Adenta, Lakeside, Borteyman, Pantang and Kwabenya.

She said emergency response teams have been activated across the region, while drains and gutters are being desilted to reduce the impact of flooding.

Ms Ocloo stressed that flood prevention should not be seen as the responsibility of government alone, but rather a collective responsibility that requires discipline and active public participation.

She therefore urged residents to desist from dumping refuse into drains and waterways, warning that such practices continue to contribute significantly to flooding in many communities.

The Minister also advised residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert during heavy rains and comply with safety directives issued by authorities.

As part of efforts to improve visibility and security during the rainy season, Ms Ocloo disclosed that the Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition, has installed 3,000 solar streetlights on some principal roads within the region.

She added that Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives have been directed to ensure sanitation taskforces clear debris after every rainfall to prevent choked gutters and subsequent flooding.

Ms. Ocloo assured residents that the RCC would continue working with all relevant stakeholders to protect lives and property throughout the rainy season.

She called on the public to support the ongoing interventions to help build a safer and flood-resilient Greater Accra Region.

The Minister also advised residents living in flood-prone areas to remain alert during heavy rains and comply with safety directives issued by authorities.
