National President of TUTAG, Prof. Deodat Emilson Adenutsi explained that although the association had resolved to suspend the industrial action, it had deliberately stopped short of calling it off.

“Congress deliberated yesterday (Thursday, October 29) and resolved that for the sake of students and national harmony and for the sake of development and our VCs, we should decide to suspend the strike but not call it off,” he said.

“That is why we say, we have cautiously suspended the strike,” he added.

Prof. Adenutsi announced that teaching and academic activities would resume at the various technical universities from November 2.

He has consequently appealed to university management to give students, particularly freshers, adequate time to complete outstanding academic processes.

He noted that many fresh students had missed orientation, registration and medical examinations because of the strike.

He urged management to make the necessary arrangements to ensure they are given ample opportunity to complete those processes.

The strike was triggered by three main issues: the non-payment of staff engaged on post-retirement contracts, changes to the promotion requirements for assistant lecturers, and the classification of academic librarians as academic staff.

TUTAG at a meeting on Wednesday, October 28, 2026 between GTEC, the Vice-Chancellors of Technical Universities, Ghana (VCTU-G) agreed to consult its general membership on the immediate suspension of its strike.

The decision was contained in a joint communiqué issued after the meeting to resolve the issues underpinning the industrial action.

The parties agreed that TUTAG would consult its members and immediately suspend the strike while efforts continued to address the outstanding concerns.
