The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has strengthened Ghana’s veterinary service delivery system with a major package of logistical, digital and laboratory support aimed at improving animal health surveillance and expanding access to veterinary care across the country.

The intervention includes the provision of a fleet of 20 Toyota Hilux four-wheel-drive pickup vehicles and 261 motorcycles to enhance mobility and ensure veterinary officers can reach remote and hard-to-access communities.

The support is expected to significantly improve field response capacity, disease surveillance and emergency animal health interventions, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where logistical challenges have previously constrained service delivery.

In addition to transport logistics, FAO has supplied 115 laptop computers, 110 tablet devices and 90 desktop computers to strengthen administrative efficiency, data management and diagnostic coordination within the veterinary services system.

The digital equipment is expected to enhance real-time reporting, improve disease tracking and support evidence-based decision-making in animal health management.

The package also includes essential laboratory inputs such as reagents, diagnostic kits, field sampling materials and personal protective equipment for veterinary personnel, aimed at improving diagnostic accuracy and strengthening biosecurity standards.

Beyond equipment supply, six veterinary laboratories across the country are currently undergoing rehabilitation to enhance their operational capacity and improve diagnostic turnaround times.

Officials say the combined interventions are intended to modernise Ghana’s veterinary infrastructure, strengthen disease preparedness and support national efforts to safeguard both animal and public health.

The support package is also expected to contribute to improved food safety, livestock productivity and the prevention of zoonotic disease outbreaks, which remain a key concern in agricultural and public health systems.

The initiative forms part of broader collaboration between Ghana and FAO to build resilient agricultural systems and strengthen veterinary public health capacity in line with international standards.
