The African Petroleum Producers’ Organisation (APPO) has intensified efforts to accelerate the operationalisation of the African Energy Bank (AEB), as member countries push for greater financial independence in the continent’s oil and gas sector.

This came to the fore when the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) hosted APPO Secretary General H.E. Farid Ghezali at its Research and Technology Centre in Accra on Friday, 22 May 2026, for high-level discussions on energy financing, policy coordination, and regional integration.

The meeting placed strong emphasis on the African Energy Bank initiative, which is being positioned as a key continental mechanism to reduce Africa’s reliance on external financing for oil and gas development projects.

Discussions focused on capital mobilisation, governance structures, and the participation of member states as preparations continue towards the formal launch of the bank.

The Secretary General of APPO said the project represents a strategic shift towards African-led energy financing, describing it as critical to the continent’s long-term energy security and industrial development.

He stressed the need for stronger cooperation among member countries to build institutions capable of supporting Africa’s energy transition and production goals.

GNPC was represented by its Chief Executive Officer, Ghana National Petroleum Corporation, Mr. Kwame Ntow Amoah, who also chairs the APPO NOC CEOs Forum, alongside senior executives of the corporation.

The GNPC Chief Executive reaffirmed Ghana’s support for regional collaboration and institutional strengthening within the energy sector, noting that African partnerships remain essential to building technical and financial capacity.

He said initiatives such as the African Energy Bank would help unlock long-term value by improving access to capital and strengthening upstream and downstream investments across the continent.

Beyond financing, the talks also explored policy harmonisation, regulatory alignment, and local content development as critical tools for improving Africa’s investment climate and competitiveness.

Participants further discussed capacity-building initiatives, including training, certification, and technical exchanges aimed at strengthening expertise across the oil and gas value chain.

As part of the visit, the APPO delegation toured GNPC’s Research and Technology Centre, where they inspected laboratories, research facilities, and data management systems supporting the corporation’s operations.

The engagement reinforced ongoing efforts by African oil-producing countries to strengthen cooperation and reduce dependence on external institutions in shaping the continent’s energy future.
