World Cup 2026: Herbert Mensah commends Thomas Partey after England draw

President of Rugby Africa, Herbert Mensah, has reserved special praise for Black Stars midfielder Thomas Partey following Ghana's hard-fought 0-0 draw against England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the match, Mensah highlighted Partey's leadership and defensive awareness as key factors in Ghana's resilient performance, which frustrated a star-studded England attack.

"Thomas Partey played an important role in shielding the defence and helping to maintain the team's structure throughout the game," Mensah noted.

Partey returned to the starting lineup for the first time in the tournament after being denied entry into Canada for Ghana's opening match against Panama due to visa issues. His presence in midfield proved crucial as the Black Stars held England to a goalless stalemate.

The draw leaves England and Ghana level on four points at the top of Group L, with England leading on goal difference. Croatia are third with three points, while Panama are bottom without a point.

Mensah also praised Ghana's defensive organisation, which he described as the foundation of the result. He highlighted the team's compact shape and the cohesion between the midfield and defensive units, which limited England's space in attacking areas.

Looking ahead, Mensah warned that Ghana's final group match against Croatia on Saturday will present a different challenge.

"Croatia are a very efficient and technically gifted side. Ghana will have to remain disciplined and organised throughout the match," he said.
