GH¢685 million has been set aside to start sea defence works in the Volta Region under the World Bank-backed West Africa Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project (WACA), President John Dramani Mahama says.

Speaking at the 64th Hogbetsotso Festival durbar in Anloga on Saturday, November 7, Mahama said the package responds to appeals from Anlo traditional leaders over recurring tidal wave destruction in Fuveme and neighbouring coastal settlements.

"I can answer you directly on this one and confirm that 685 million Ghana cedis have been allocated to commence coastal protection works under the West African Coastal Areas Resilience Investment Project, popularly known as WACA," Mahama said.

The programme also covers lagoon and watershed rehabilitation and provides livelihood support for residents in affected coastal communities, with particular focus on women, young people and persons with disabilities.

"No family should have to endure repeated displacement because of coastal erosion," Mahama told the chiefs and residents. "Reference to Fuveme and the surrounding communities brings us back to the human consequences of coastal erosion. Behind every damaged home is a household whose security has been taken away."

He urged residents and traditional authorities to stop destroying coastal mangroves and wetlands, warning that stripping shoreline vegetation leaves communities exposed to tidal surges. Earlier in the durbar, the Awoamefia of the Anlo State, Torgbui Sri III, had called for urgent WACA beach reclamation and uninterrupted work on Phase II of the Blekusu Sea Defence Project.

GH¢500 million for Volta district housing, markets and campus projects

Beyond coastal works, Mahama announced at the Anloga durbar that the government has earmarked an additional GH¢500 million for district housing across the Volta Region, complementing the Oxygen City project in Ho, and assured Anloga residents that their district would benefit.

He added that land acquisition and designs have been completed for the proposed 24-hour Aflao-Ashigame market ahead of a Chinese technical team's visit to trigger a US$30 million Chinese government grant, while preparations are also advancing for a 24-hour market in Anloga.

Responding to education appeals from Torgbui Sri III, Mahama disclosed that a site in Keta has been secured and inspected for a University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) School of Pharmacy, with campus designs and procurement to follow.

He also pledged to refer requests for a dormitory block at Anlo Awoamefia Senior High School at Anyako, E-Blocks for Shime and Anlo Senior High School (ANSECO), and upgrades at Atiavi Senior High Technical School to the Ministry of Education and GETFund.
