Africa World Airlines (AWA) says social media claims that one of its planes had a technical fault and passengers were evacuated at Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi are false.

In a statement on Saturday, November 7, the airline asked the public and the media to ignore the posts.

Posts circulating online had alleged that an AWA aircraft experienced a mechanical failure on the tarmac in Kumasi, forcing an emergency evacuation of travellers. The airline, which recently marked its 13th anniversary, said no such incident took place.

According to AWA, the aircraft seen at the airport is its Embraer E190 jet, which began mandatory demonstration flights on Thursday, November 5, under the supervision of the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA).

Only flight crew and GCAA safety inspectors were on board during the exercises, with no commercial passengers on the aircraft, the statement said. That made any claim of a passenger evacuation unfounded, the airline noted.

Under GCAA aviation regulations, an airline introducing a new aircraft type into its fleet must complete supervised demonstration flights to test operational readiness and safety compliance before starting scheduled commercial services.

AWA urged travellers and journalists to verify operational updates through its official communication channels rather than sharing unconfirmed social media posts.

The airline added that it reserves the right to take appropriate action against individuals who knowingly spread false information about its operations.
