Two people sustained gunshot injuries while a private vehicle, two motorbikes and a fence wall were destroyed during a violent disturbance at Deti, a suburb of Akatsi in the Volta Region, on Wednesday (27 May 2026).

The incident has triggered a police investigation into attempted murder and causing unlawful damage, with one suspect already in custody and a manhunt underway for other individuals connected to the disturbance.

According to a statement issued by the Volta Regional Police Public Affairs Unit, the victims, identified as James Kpanda, 44, and Jonathan Kpanda, 30, suffered gunshot wounds during the confrontation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that at about 10:30am on the day of the incident, a group of young men, including the two victims, allegedly went to the residence of one Mensah Awagah and began pulling down his fence wall.

Police said the action reportedly angered the suspect, who allegedly went into his room, retrieved a firearm and opened fire on the group.

James Kpanda sustained a gunshot wound to the knee, while Jonathan Kpanda suffered a gunshot injury to the eye.

The shooting sparked outrage among some youth in the area, who allegedly went on a rampage and set ablaze a Mercedes-Benz private car and two motorbikes parked within the suspect’s residence.

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were called to the scene to contain the fire, but the vehicle and motorbikes had already been burnt beyond recognition before firefighters arrived.

The Akatsi District Police Command has since taken Mensah Awagah into custody to assist with investigations.

The two injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Akatsi District Hospital.

Police say efforts are ongoing to apprehend other persons involved in the disturbance as investigations continue.

Authorities have assured the public that further updates will be communicated as the case develops.
