The University of Ghana has lauded the crew of the Artemis II Mission following the successful completion of the historic mission, with special recognition given to astronaut Christina Koch, a former exchange student of the institution.

In a statement, the University commended the astronauts for their groundbreaking achievement, describing the mission as a significant milestone in global space exploration and a source of inspiration for students and researchers worldwide.

Particular attention was drawn to Koch, who undertook an exchange programme at the University of Ghana during the 1999/2000 academic year while studying electrical engineering and physics at North Carolina State University

The University noted that Koch’s journey from an exchange student in Ghana to a key figure in one of NASA’s most ambitious missions underscores the value of international academic exposure and cross-cultural learning.

In recent years, the University of Ghana has stepped up efforts to deepen its internationalisation drive through expanded exchange programmes, strategic partnerships and summer school initiatives. These programmes continue to attract a growing number of international students, while also offering Ghanaian students opportunities to gain global academic experience.

Management further indicated that global feats such as the Artemis II Mission are shaping the University’s long-term academic vision, particularly in the areas of science and engineering.

The institution is exploring opportunities to strengthen its programmes in these fields, with plans to eventually introduce space science-related studies aimed at equipping young Ghanaians with the skills to participate in future advancements in science, technology and innovation.

The University reiterated its congratulations to the Artemis II crew on their achievement, expressing confidence that their success will inspire a new generation across Ghana, Africa and beyond to pursue careers in science and innovation.
