Ghana has lost about 1,000 megawatts of power from the national grid following a fire outbreak at the Akosombo substation in the Eastern Region, the Ministry of Energy and Green Transition has confirmed.

Richmond Rockson, Spokesperson and Head of Communications at the Ministry, disclosed in a Facebook post on Saturday, 25 April 2026, that the incident has triggered widespread power interruptions across the country.

“In the last 24 hours, we have experienced widespread power interruptions beyond isolated pockets of outages. This has been triggered by a fire explosion at the Akosombo substation, a critical facility within our power generation and transmission network,” he said.

According to him, the situation has led to a complete halt in power generation from the facility.

“As we speak, no power is being generated from Akosombo, resulting in a loss of approximately 1,000 megawatts to the national grid. This sudden shortfall has placed significant strain on the system and is the main cause of the broader interruptions currently being experienced,” Mr Rockson explained.

He noted that engineers and technical teams are already on site working to restore supply.

“Our engineers and technical teams are on site and working around the clock to restore generation as quickly and safely as possible,” he added.

The Ministry has appealed to the public for patience as efforts are intensified to stabilise the power system.

“Government remains committed to restoring full power generation,” Mr Rockson said.
