President John Dramani Mahama has highlighted cultural understanding as key to Ghana-Russia relations during a visit to a kente exhibition in Moscow.

He visited Woven Meanings at the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts, an exhibition that brings the artistry and cultural narratives of Ghanaian weaving to Russian audiences.

The exhibition presents kente not merely as a traditional fabric but as an expression of Ghanaian history, social values and identity. Its intricate patterns, striking colour combinations and symbolic designs reflect a rich tradition of craftsmanship preserved and transmitted across generations.

Among the exhibits are samples of kente and a traditional weaving loom of the type still used by artisans in the Kumasi area. Particularly notable are two kente cloaks: one associated with Ghana’s first President, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, and the other belonging to President Mahama.

The pieces provide a compelling connection between Ghana’s political history and one of its most enduring cultural traditions.

For President Mahama, the exhibition represents an important opportunity to deepen understanding between the two countries beyond their formal diplomatic engagements.

“Although we have established intergovernmental contacts and relations between our two countries, the strongest and most enduring ties are those between people. And these ties can only be strengthened through an understanding of each other’s cultures,” he observed.

He thanked the organisers and their partners for bringing Ghana’s textile heritage to Moscow, particularly acknowledging the interest shown by Russian visitors and the availability of explanatory materials in Russian.

The response from the public has been encouraging. Tatyana Rybkina, Director of the All-Russian Museum of Decorative Arts, disclosed that more than 11,000 people had visited the exhibition in less than two weeks.

Dmitry Savelyev, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs and Director General of the Centre for Public Diplomacy, highlighted the longstanding foundations of Ghana-Russia relations, including the educational connections established during the Soviet period. He also expressed appreciation to the museum for its partnership in organising the exhibition.

Organised with the participation of the Centre for Public Diplomacy (CPD), and with the direct assistance of the Russian House of the Centre for Public Diplomacy in Ghana, Woven Meanings forms part of the International Festival of African Culture and Cinema, Africa: Together into the Future. It is also included in the cultural programme of the Third Russia-Africa Summit.

The Russian House of the Centre for Public Diplomacy in Ghana provided direct assistance in bringing the exhibition to fruition, reflecting its commitment to promoting Ghanaian cultural heritage in Russia and advancing humanitarian and cultural relations between the two countries.

The exhibition is particularly significant at a time when cultural diplomacy is increasingly recognised as an important complement to conventional international relations. While trade, investment and political cooperation often dominate bilateral discussions, cultural exchanges provide a different route to mutual understanding, allowing people to engage with the histories, traditions and creative expressions of other societies.

For Ghana, kente offers a particularly powerful ambassador. Recognised internationally for its distinctive aesthetic and craftsmanship, the textile has become synonymous with Ghanaian identity and is increasingly represented in global fashion, design and cultural expression.

Taking its story to Moscow therefore does more than showcase a traditional craft. It introduces Russian audiences to the historical and cultural imagination of Ghana while creating opportunities for a deeper appreciation of the country and its people.

Ultimately, the significance of Woven Meanings lies not simply in the number of visitors it attracts, but in the conversations it inspires and the connections it helps establish.

As President Mahama’s visit suggests, the strongest international relationships are not built exclusively around agreements signed by governments. They also grow through shared cultural experiences and an appreciation of what makes each society distinctive.

In Moscow, Ghana is telling that story through kente.
