The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has opened a new regional office in Kadjebi, in the Oti Region, as part of efforts to improve operations and bring National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) services closer to the people.

Chief Executive Dr Victor Asare Bampoe commissioned the facility on October 28, 2026. He charged staff to make sure the investment in infrastructure and logistics leads to better results, particularly through stronger membership drives and renewals.

Only about 225,000 of the region’s estimated 649,000 residents had been enrolled in the NHIS by the end of September.

Dr Bampoe admitted that weak telecommunications networks, poor roads and widely scattered communities make the work difficult. He announced that another round of Operation Market Storm, a special registration campaign aimed at densely populated communities and markets, will take place in November.

He also asked staff to promote the digital NHIS platforms and to step up outreach programmes such as NHIS at Your Doorstep and the One-Time Attendance Code (OTAC).

“Every member interaction is an opportunity to build public confidence in the NHIS,” he said, urging staff to place the restoration of trust and the protection of members’ interests at the centre of their work.

Dr Bampoe thanked President John Dramani Mahama, the Minister of Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minister of Health, Mr Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, and the NHIA Board for their support in completing the project. He also acknowledged the previous administration for starting it.

The NHIA Board Chairman, Mr Larry Adjetey Esq., said the new office reflects the Authority’s commitment to quality service in the newly created region. He urged staff to treat members with respect and courtesy, and encouraged residents to patronise the Scheme and hold the Authority to account.

In a statement read on his behalf by Presidential Staffer Mr Sulemana Momoni, the Oti Regional Minister, Mr John Kwadwo Gyapong, noted that inadequate office space had been a major challenge since the region was created, leaving many government institutions in rented premises. He commended the NHIA for providing a befitting facility and asked management to maintain it and ensure that the improved environment translates into higher enrolment and better service.

The Oti Regional Director, Mr Julius Nelimor, thanked the Board and management for completing the project in under a year. He said the region had also received a fibre boat to extend services to hard-to-reach island communities. Describing the office as “a symbol of growth, stability and hope,” he said it would improve efficiency, staff morale and supervision. He pledged staff commitment to maintaining the facility and to ensuring residents have access to affordable, quality healthcare under the NHIS.

Members of the delegation included Dr Koku Awoonor-Williams, Technical Adviser to the Minister of Health; Mr Harold Boateng, Board Secretary; Ms Francisca Atuluk, Director of Social Protection at the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection; Mr Oswald Essuah-Mensah, Director of Corporate Affairs; Mr Raymond Avinu, Director of Administration; and Ms Nina Amoah-Buabeng, Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive.

Others were Ms Faustina Dery, Head of Communications; Mr Louis Lawerteh, Deputy Director of Administration; Ms Victoria Hyde-Antwi, Senior Manager of the Protocol Unit; and Ms Victoria Akita, Acting Manager at the Board Secretariat.
