The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has inspected ongoing emergency restoration works at the Akosombo Switchyard following the fire incident of 23 April 2026, which destroyed the Switchyard Control Room and disrupted electricity supply across the country.

The visit forms part of government efforts to restore full operational capacity at one of Ghana’s critical power transmission nodes after the incident significantly affected national power stability.

At the site, the Minister received a detailed briefing from the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), led by Ing. Frank Otchere, on the progress of emergency works and interim measures being implemented to stabilise operations.

Work currently ongoing includes the construction of a Temporary Control Room fitted with modern control systems to ensure continuity of operations while permanent restoration works are undertaken.

The Temporary Control Room is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026, according to officials overseeing the project.

As part of the broader recovery plan, enhanced fire protection systems are also being installed to safeguard both interim and permanent facilities at the Switchyard.

Government is additionally engaging key power sector stakeholders on the construction of a permanent ultra-modern Control Room aimed at strengthening the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure.

The restoration effort is being undertaken in collaboration with GRIDCo and the Volta River Authority, whose technical teams continue to work on stabilising and securing the facility following the fire incident.

The Energy Minister commended the technical teams for their work, noting their role in ensuring the rapid restoration and long-term strengthening of the country’s power transmission systems.
