The countdown to Christmas has started, and so has the spending headache.

How do you make the season feel special without emptying your pocket? As the festive season approaches, one question is already splitting people: how much are you planning to spend?

For many households, Christmas is no longer just about celebration. It is about food, new clothes, transport, gifts, church offerings, and outings, all landing in the same month, at a time when prices are already high. Some are planning early to avoid the last-minute rush. Others say there is simply nothing to plan with.

For some, the answer is already in thousands. For others, there is no budget at all, just hope, and whatever comes.

Alberta said she is ready to go all out this year, because after a difficult year, she wants to give back to the people who stood by her.

"My budget is about two thousand cedis or three thousand for the Christmas and even maybe more than that if things go right because this Christmas must be great. I have a lot of things I have to give to people. My mom, some of my friends that really made the year really good to me.”

For her, Christmas is not about showing off. It is about appreciation. The people who made the year bearable deserve to be remembered, even if it means stretching the budget a little further than planned.

Ms Patricia is taking the opposite approach, no plan, no pressure.

"This Christmas I don’t really have a budget. If anything goes well, fine. If it doesn’t, fine. If I had money like maybe I’ll try and then get myself a new phone or something but I don’t have money, I'll wait for people to send me Christmas gifts. What will happen should happen.”

It is a feeling many can relate to. When money is tight, Christmas becomes less about what you will buy, and more about what will come your way. There is no new phone, no big shopping, just waiting, and hoping someone remembers you.

Then there is the detailed planner, Mr. Ben, the one who has already broken Christmas down line by line, cedi by cedi, so nothing catches him by surprise.

"You all know it’s Christmas. You have to look good. You have to look nice. So I might get my hair, my clothes. Yes, I’m wearing new clothes. So I’ll put three hundred cedis for that.”

"Then Christmas you have to show love to your friends and family. So you have to gift. So for gifts I’ll put some small two hundred cedis here.”

"Then outings with friends. You have to go to parties with friends to make the Christmas more fun. So you have to put some 250 cedis for outings.”

"And from after the outing, you know Christmas, you have to go and give thanks to God. So you have to go to the house of the Lord and give offerings too.”

"That’s my plan for Christmas. I don’t know about yours. Merry Christmas to everyone in advance.”

His plan captures what Christmas means for many, looking good, showing love, having fun, and giving thanks. Even with just GH¢1000 for clothes, gifts and outings, plus an offering, he has found a way to make the season feel complete without trying to do everything at once.

And that is really the heart of the Christmas money talk. It is not about who spends the most. It is about knowing what matters to you, and finding a way to celebrate it without starting the new year broke.
