The Universal Friendship Organisation (UFO) has called on the Electoral Commission (EC) to institute regular dialogue with citizens as a way of deepening understanding of Ghana’s electoral process and preventing misunderstandings between the public and the Commission. The appeal was made during a courtesy call by the leadership of the UFO on the EC leadership in Accra.

The Organisation said consistent engagement with citizens on electoral procedures would help build greater public confidence in the work of the Commission and also reduce suspicion, particularly during election periods.

Speaking at the meeting, an Executive Member of the UFO, Madam Hajia Bintu Saana urged the EC not to limit public engagement to election seasons alone. “The EC should continue its public awareness regularly not only during electoral periods. This will help address misunderstandings between citizens, especially political parties and reduce tensions around elections,” she said.

Madam Saana added that a proactive approach to civic education would demystify electoral procedures and encourage more informed participation across the country.

The UFO leadership also acknowledged the EC’s role in maintaining Ghana’s democratic development since 1992, describing the Commission as a pillar of the country’s peace and stability. “The work of the Electoral Commission must be acknowledged and supported by all Ghanaians. It is through credible and transparent elections that our democracy thrives,” the organisation stated.

As a gesture of appreciation, the UFO President, Mr. Samuel Adobah, on behalf of the Organisation, presented a citation to the EC. “This citation will serve as a symbol of recognition for the Commission’s commitment to upholding Ghana’s democratic and peaceful development over the years,” Mr. Adobah said.

The citation forms part of UFO’s commitment to promoting peace, unity, and stability through friendship. The organisation noted that it has already acknowledged the six aspirants who contested the recent NPP presidential primaries for their role in upholding peace during the party’s internal elections. Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum has also received acknowledgement for his contributions to promoting peace.

On his part, the Deputy Chairperson of the EC in-charge of Corporate Affairs, Dr. Bossman Asare, assured that the Commission would continue to strengthen Ghana’s electoral management system so that the general public can have trust in its work.

Dr. Asare emphasized that Ghana’s electoral management has been recognized as one of the best in Africa due to the Commission’s independent work.

UFO said it believes that regular dialogue between the EC and the public will bridge the gap between the Commission and citizens, reduce misconceptions, and reinforce trust in Ghana’s electoral system ahead of future polls.

The organisation pledged its continued support for initiatives that promote peace, unity and civic responsibility in Ghana.
