Ghana has intensified efforts to strengthen Pan-African tourism, cultural diplomacy and business partnerships with Ethiopia following the launch of Ghana Month in Addis Ababa under the Black Star Experience Secretariat initiative.

The event, held at the Kuriftu African Village, brought together diplomats, tourism stakeholders, investors, creatives and business leaders from across Africa to promote deeper collaboration between the two countries through tourism, trade and culture.

The programme was coordinated by the Black Star Experience Secretariat led by Rex Owusu Marfo in partnership with Bridge54.

The launch featured exhibitions of Ghanaian culture and products including live Kente weaving, Ghanaian cuisine, chocolate tasting, Shea Butter displays, GTP fabrics and indigenous crafts.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement by Tadiwos G. Belete that a dedicated shop would be established in Ethiopia to market Ghanaian products.

The initiative is expected to increase commercial visibility and create new opportunities for Ghanaian businesses within the Ethiopian market.

Discussions at the event also revealed plans for a Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana Tourism Authority and Ethiopian tourism authorities to strengthen tourism cooperation and jointly market both destinations.

Stakeholders identified Ethiopia’s large market size and strong air connectivity as major opportunities for tourism and investment growth, especially with Ethiopian Airlines currently operating three daily flights from Accra.

Participants also welcomed Ghana’s visa-free entry policy for Africans, which takes effect from 25 May, describing it as a significant boost for regional integration, tourism and economic cooperation on the continent.

As part of activities marking Ghana Month, Ghanaian chefs are expected to remain in Ethiopia throughout May to promote Ghanaian cuisine and culinary experiences.

GTP also announced plans to expand into the Ethiopian market with fabric designs tailored specifically to Ethiopian tastes and preferences.

The event attracted participation from Ghana’s Ambassador to Ethiopia, Robert Afriyie, representatives of United Nations Permanent Missions, the Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia, officials from the Ghana Investment Promotion Centre, the Ghana Tourism Authority and several Ghanaian small and medium-scale enterprises.

Among the Ghanaian brands represented were 57 Chocolates, Skin Gourmet and local fashion houses and artisans.

The engagement also focused on expanding partnerships in tourism, mining, investment and the creative economy as Ghana positions the Black Star Experience as a major platform for Pan-African cultural and economic integration ahead of the country’s 70th anniversary celebrations next year.
