The Government of Ghana has summoned South Africa’s top diplomat in Accra in a strong diplomatic protest over renewed xenophobic incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, in South Africa.

In a press release issued on Thursday (23 April 2026), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the Acting South African High Commissioner, Thando Dalamba, was invited for urgent discussions following disturbing incidents captured in widely circulated viral videos.

Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressed deep concern over what he described as acts of intimidation and harassment against law-abiding foreign nationals, warning that such actions undermine human dignity and threaten African solidarity.

The Minister cited a troubling incident in KwaZulu-Natal, where a Ghanaian resident was reportedly confronted, asked to provide proof of legal status, and told to leave the country. Ablakwa noted that such conduct is unacceptable and violates the rights of individuals lawfully residing in South Africa.

He further indicated that follow-up reports suggest rising tensions, with some foreign nationals, including Ghanaians, being advised to remain indoors for their safety. Although no fatalities or injuries have been recorded in the current situation, he cautioned that similar incidents in the past have led to loss of lives and destruction of property.

Ablakwa also underscored the long-standing historical and fraternal relations between Ghana and South Africa, recalling Ghana’s support during the anti-apartheid struggle and the contributions of Kwame Nkrumah to Africa’s liberation efforts.

He stressed that unprovoked attacks on foreign nationals are contrary to the principles of African unity and peaceful coexistence, urging restraint and respect among citizens across the continent.

The Government of Ghana has formally registered its protest and is calling for immediate and effective measures to ensure the protection of Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, as well as firm assurances that such incidents will not recur.

In response, the Acting High Commissioner acknowledged the concerns raised and assured that South African authorities are closely monitoring the situation, with steps being taken to prevent further violence and hold those responsible accountable.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding the welfare of Ghanaians abroad and pledged continued engagement with South African authorities to ensure their safety.
