Court workers will stay on strike unless the government accepts the revised demands on their 2026 conditions of service, the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) says.

JUSAG first sent its demands to the Presidency, he said, and scaled them back when the reply did not satisfy members. “At our last meeting, we outlined the demands that we wanted to be met, which was conveyed to the Presidency and we were expecting feedback,” Yakubu said.

“The feedback came and it did not satisfy the demands that we have had and so we decided to revise our position to make it easy for government to meet those demands.”

Yakubu described the revised package as the association's final compromise. “We made it clear that the revised position was the best we could do for the government and if the government wouldn’t agree to the demands that we are making, we may continue the strike,” he said.

“At our leadership level, the position remains that, given the extent to which we have gone with the government, if it is unable to meet our demands, we may still have to continue the strike.”

While leaving four undisclosed items in dispute, JUSAG insists on written Presidential approval of the Judicial Council's 2026 salary review recommendations under Article 149 of the 1992 Constitution and the Judicial Service Regulations (C.I. 141), which guarantee judicial staff a salary review rate no lower than other public workers receive.

Court registries across Ghana have remained shut since the indefinite strike began on Monday, November 2, stranding litigants and halting hearings, including a case involving a patient who could not obtain a court attestation to travel abroad for a kidney transplant.

After the Supreme Court sat on Tuesday and Wednesday on the orders of Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, JUSAG also directed its members at the apex court to stay away from work until the government meets its revised demands.
