President John Dramani Mahama has officially cut the sod for the construction of an interconnecting concourse between Terminals 2 and 3 at the Kotoka International Airport, setting in motion a major infrastructure expansion aimed at easing congestion and strengthening Ghana’s position as a leading aviation hub in West Africa.

The sod-cutting ceremony in Accra marks the commencement of a significant project expected to improve passenger movement, enhance operational efficiency, and modernise services at the country’s busiest airport.

Speaking at the event, President Mahama stressed that the initiative goes far beyond symbolism, describing it as a strategic investment in efficiency, passenger experience, and Ghana’s long-term economic outlook.

“This is not just about cutting sod. It is about improving efficiency, enhancing passenger experience, and positioning Ghana as a competitive aviation hub in the sub-region,” he said.

He noted that passenger traffic at the airport has witnessed steady growth, rising from 1.8 million in 2022 to 2.5 million in 2025, a trend he said reflects Ghana’s increasing connectivity and appeal as a travel destination.

While acknowledging the progress, the President drew attention to growing operational pressures at the airport, particularly during peak hours, where congestion continues to strain key services and affect efficiency.

He warned that without urgent interventions, the situation could worsen, potentially undermining service delivery and the country’s aviation ambitions.

The proposed interconnecting concourse is expected to bridge the gap between Terminals 2 and 3, enabling seamless passenger movement and improving coordination within the airport system.

Once completed, the facility will include modern passenger boarding bridges, expanded waiting areas, VIP lounges, retail outlets, and upgraded service infrastructure designed to improve overall airport operations and passenger comfort.

The project is also expected to strengthen Ghana’s competitiveness in the regional aviation space, as neighbouring countries continue to invest heavily in airport modernisation to attract airlines and transit traffic.
