Kumasi Braces For Water Supply Disruptions…..GWL Shuts Down Barekese Plant For Critical Repairs

Residents of the Kumasi Metropolitan Area a_nd several adjoining communities are expected to experience interruptions in water supply from Tuesday, June 9, to Thursday, June 11, 2026, following the temporary shutdown of the Barekese Water Treatment Plant for critical maintenance works.

A statement issued by the Ashanti Regional Management of Ghana Water Limited (GWL) said the shutdown is necessary to allow engineers to undertake urgent repairs on the transmission pipeline serving the treatment plant.

According to the company, the repair works are essential to protect the integrity of the transmission pipeline and ensure its continued reliable operation.

The statement indicated that the Barekese Water Treatment Plant will be shut down from 6:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, until 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, June 11, 2026.

As a result, water production and supply to Kumasi and surrounding communities are expected to be affected during the period.

Ghana Water Limited has therefore advised residents, institutions, and businesses within the affected areas to store adequate quantities of water ahead of the shutdown to mitigate the impact of the temporary disruption.

The company expressed regret for any inconvenience the exercise may cause and appealed to customers for patience and cooperation.

Management further assured the public that water production and distribution would resume immediately after the completion of the repair works.

The maintenance exercise, GWL noted, forms part of efforts to improve the reliability and sustainability of water supply services in the Ashanti Region.
