Frank Lampard's Coventry City moved out of the Premier League relegation zone after securing a convincing 3-1 victory over Sunderland, leaving the struggling visitors at the bottom of the table.

Tatsuhiro Sakamoto, Taiwo Awoniyi and Jack Rudoni were all on target as Coventry claimed only their third league win of the season.

Enzo Le Fee scored from the penalty spot for Sunderland in the second half, but his effort proved insufficient to inspire a comeback.

Lampard made four alterations to his starting line-up following last weekend's defeat by Fulham, with captain Matt Grimes among those left out. The changes appeared to have a positive effect, as Coventry produced a much-improved performance and took control of the contest.

Sunderland's defensive weaknesses contributed significantly to their difficult afternoon, with the visitors struggling to deal with Coventry's attacking threat.

The home side broke the deadlock in the 17th minute after Sunderland failed to deal properly with a routine cross. The loose ball fell into the path of Sakamoto, who took advantage of the opportunity by producing an excellent finish from the edge of the penalty area.

The goal gave Coventry an early advantage and increased the pressure on a Sunderland team already struggling for consistency.

Lampard's side doubled their lead eight minutes before the interval, with Awoniyi capitalising on another defensive lapse.

Sunderland's Luke O'Nien was dispossessed far too easily by the Coventry forward in the 37th minute. Awoniyi then advanced through the visitors' defence, encountering little resistance from several weak challenges before seeing his effort take a deflection on its way into the net.

The second goal left Sunderland facing a difficult task, particularly as they had offered very little attacking threat during the opening 45 minutes.

Brian Brobbey had provided one of their better opportunities in the first half, but his attempt failed to find the target. Overall, the visitors struggled to create meaningful chances and were unable to respond to Coventry's attacking pressure.

Their hopes of recovering from the two-goal deficit suffered another major blow shortly after the restart.

Just seven minutes into the second half, Rudoni found the net to put Coventry firmly in control. His effort took a deflection off Sunderland defender Omar Alderete, who had attempted to intervene by stretching out a leg to block the shot.

The change in direction left Sunderland further behind and gave Coventry a commanding three-goal advantage.

Sunderland did have opportunities to improve their position, with Chemsdine Talbi missing a promising chance before the visitors were handed an opportunity from the penalty spot.

The decision followed a lengthy review by referee Simon Hooper, who examined a handball involving Coventry defender Ethan Pinnock. Pinnock had raised his arm in an attempt to block a shot from O'Nien, prompting the officials to award a penalty.

Le Fee stepped forward and converted the resulting spot-kick in the 67th minute, reducing the deficit to two goals and offering Sunderland a brief opportunity to mount a challenge.

However, the Black Cats were unable to build on their goal, with Coventry maintaining their advantage until the final whistle.

The visitors' disappointing afternoon became even worse during stoppage time when Alderete was dismissed. The defender received a second yellow card after bringing down Rudoni, leaving Sunderland to finish the match with 10 players.

The defeat means Sunderland have now lost six of their past nine league matches, extending a difficult period for a side that remains at the foot of the Premier League standings.
