Chairperson of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Security and Intelligence, Zanetor Agyemang-Rawlings, has stated that youth participation in peacebuilding and conflict prevention is critical to strengthening security governance and sustaining stability in Ghana and the wider sub-region.

She made the point during an engagement between the committee and a joint mission team from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Crisis Bureau and Regional Bureau for Africa at Parliament House.

The discussions focused on Security Sector Reform (SSR) implementation gaps and emerging security challenges affecting Ghana and West Africa.

The meeting examined key peace and security concerns in the sub-region, with emphasis on improving coordination and addressing weaknesses that continue to slow down security sector reforms.

Maritime Domain Awareness also featured in the discussions.

It was highlighted as an important factor in safeguarding coastal areas and enhancing regional stability amid evolving security threats.

The Committee and UNDP further reviewed the role of young people in peacebuilding systems.

At the centre of this was the need to meaningfully involve young people in peacebuilding and conflict prevention efforts as part of broader efforts to build more inclusive and responsive security structures.

Participants noted that the changing nature of security threats across the sub-region requires more preventive, collaborative and inclusive approaches to governance and conflict management.

The engagement forms part of ongoing collaboration between Parliament and development partners.

It is aimed at strengthening security sector reforms and improving peace and stability outcomes across the region.
