Sunderland defeated Chelsea 1-0 at the Stadium of Light on Sunday for their first Premier League victory since August, while Liverpool beat bottom-placed Crystal Palace 3-1 at Selhurst Park to move into fourth place.

French midfielder Enzo Le Fée scored the decisive goal on Wearside from the penalty spot in the 36th minute, sending Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders the wrong way.

Referee Jarred Gillett awarded the spot-kick after ruling that defender Levi Colwill had pulled down Dutch-Ghanaian striker Brian Brobbey as the pair grappled inside the box.

The result handed Régis Le Bris’s side only their second league win of the campaign and sixth across all competitions, lifting Sunderland off the foot of the table though they remain inside the bottom three.

Xabi Alonso’s Blues — still missing injured captain Reece James — have now lost two of their past three league fixtures and stay fifth, missing the chance to climb into the Champions League places.

In south London, Andoni Iraola’s Liverpool bounced back from a midweek European loss at Fenerbahce to hand Crystal Palace a fourth consecutive league defeat.

Palace winger Yéremy Pino rattled the crossbar from close range and Jørgen Strand Larsen had an effort chalked off for offside before Alexis Mac Allister headed Liverpool in front in the 40th minute from a free-kick routine.

German playmaker Florian Wirtz doubled the lead in the 54th minute from a pass by summer signing Bradley Barcola, before Alexander Isak slotted home Liverpool’s third goal in the 89th minute for his seventh league strike of the season, according to Liverpool FC.

Substitute striker Eddie Nketiah, who is of Ghanaian heritage and replaced Strand Larsen in the 72nd minute, pulled a goal back for the hosts from the penalty spot with the final kick of stoppage time after Milos Kerkez was penalised.

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker made six saves during the contest as the Reds climbed to fourth, nine points behind leaders Arsenal, while Pierre Sage’s Palace sit bottom with seven points from a possible 30.
