Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan was in tears on Saturday as his father, George Gyan Baffour Mensah, was laid to rest.

He stood with his elder brother, former Ghana international Baffour Gyan, who read a tribute. Videos from the rites showed the former captain overcome as the two said goodbye. Baffour also played for Ghana, and for clubs in Europe.

Gyan announced the death on Friday, July 24. In that post he wrote: "I'm happy you saw my greatness, Da. Thank you for taking care of us. You will forever be in our hearts. R.I.P. (ASASE J)."

Family notices put the death on June 29, in Accra, after a short illness. He was 82, and known to the family as Asaase Jay. He stayed out of public view. Gyan has described him as a constant encouragement through the career that followed.

The burial date, Saturday, November 7, was the one the family gave after the one-week observance. Gyan shared their thanks on August 23.

That observance was on Friday, August 21, at the New Gbawe Cluster of Schools astroturf in Mallam-Gbawe. The family thanked Sports Minister Kofi Adams, Ghana Football Association president Kurt Okraku, Azumah Nelson, Abedi Pele and his family, and former GFA president Kwesi Nyantakyi for being there.

Gyan is Ghana's all-time leading scorer, with 51 goals, six of them at the World Cup, the most by an African. He played in 2006, 2010 and 2014, and scored three times as Ghana reached the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2010.
