Nine of the 11 civilians hurt in the unrest after last Tuesday's deadly dynamite blast at Hamile have gone home from hospital. The other two were moved to the Upper West Regional Hospital.

The update came from the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) sector commander at Hamile, Chief Superintendent Mohammed Abdul Manan, and the Upper West Regional Police Commander, DCOP Francis Yiribaare, when Comptroller-General of Immigration Samuel Basintale Amadu visited the border town, where the government imposed a curfew and a ban on carrying arms or offensive weapons in Hamile.

The November 3 explosion occurred on an unapproved bush route known as Mountain Back Two when two immigration officers intercepted a tricycle allegedly carrying dynamite, killing one officer and two civilians while another injured officer was airlifted to the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

During the meeting, the Chief of Happa, Hiller Dyaka Thomas Badukun III, Happa-Hamile Development Committee Chairman Alhaji Ibrahim Mohammed and youth representative Mohammed Ibrahim expressed regret over the subsequent clashes and assured the Comptroller-General of peaceful coexistence between residents and border officers.

Community leaders appealed for the lifting of the curfew and the clearance of stranded cargo trucks, noting that border restrictions had stalled trade and food vending, while urging immigration personnel to show greater restraint toward civilians.

Responding to the appeals after the Interior Ministry revised the Hamile curfew to 10:00 pm to 4:00 am, Amadu promised to consult the Minister of the Interior on lifting the curfew if calm holds, transfer officers who have overstayed their postings, and roll out a Community Engagement and Policing initiative.

"We shouldn't always come to war-war, but to jaw-jaw for peace to always prevail," Amadu told residents, warning that even a six-hour border closure causes severe build-ups of Malian cargo traffic and urging the town not to shield smugglers moving weapons and Tramadol through unapproved routes.

Accompanied by regional and sector commanders, the Comptroller-General also visited the families of the deceased civilians to commiserate with them and inspected the Mountain Back Two blast site.
